All set for Vizag bypoll

HYDERABAD: Even as campaigning for the Visakhapatnam-I byelections came to a close on Friday, Chief Electoral Officer of the State V. Bhaskar said all steps had been taken to ensure a free and a fair poll.

The CEO said local election authorities had been alerted against political parties using liquor and money to lure voters as had happened last time. Surveillance teams have been deployed in the constituency to bring the malpractices committed by candidates or their supporters to the notice of the Election Commission. The polling will take place on April 24 and the counting of votes on April 27. - Special Correspondent

Court directive to SPs

HYDERABAD: A Division Bench of the High Court directed the Superintendents of Police in the districts to take steps to execute the non-bailable warrants. The Bench directed the Director-General of Police to file a comprehensive detailed report in this regard. The Bench was dealing with a representation sent by Seetharamaiah, which was treated as a writ petition. The Bench found that the figures furnished by the DGP and the Registrar of Courts were not tallying and adjourned the case by week for comprehensive detailed information. - Legal Correspondent

Stir threat

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Beedi and Cigar Workers' Union has threatened to agitate if Centre fails to sanction houses for its members despite payment of Rs. 5,000 each by thousands of workers in the form of demand drafts.

S. Rama, union leader, in a statement on Friday charged the administration with failure to give a firm assurance after the union organised dharnas at Mahabubnagar and Warangal collectorates recently. -Special Correspondent

Pat for Medak model

Sangareddy: The mode of payment to the beneficiaries of the NREGP adopted by the Medak administration was appreciated at the Civil Services Day being celebrated in New Delhi on Friday. Speaking to The Hindu district Collector B.Venkatesam said that the meeting attended by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had deliberated on the issue of public service delivery. In Medak, the administration had opened accounts in public sector banks, Manjira Grameena bank and post offices in the name of those who had applied for work. Maoist arrested

VIZIANAGARAM: Secretary of Adivasi Viplava Porata Samiti (AVPS) of CPI(Maoist) Kondabaridi area committee Biddika Jujaru alias Ramesh was arrested while moving suspiciously at Kotakonda forest area under Neelakantapuram police station limits in the early hours on Friday. Ramesh, working as courier and a dump keeper, led the police to a dump containing one grenade, 15 live rounds, camera flash, two wire bundles, clothes etc, said SP Bhavana Saxena in a press release. - Correspondent

Headmaster suspended

Srikakulam: Headmaster of Karimallapeta Mandal Parishad Upper Primary School Muralidhar, who has been arrested by the police for allegedly trying to molest two girl students of his school, has been suspended. According to the police, Muralidhar brought the two girls from the school to a lodge in Srikakulam and tried to outrage their modesty. On a complaint from the girls to the lodge owner, the police entered the scene and arrested Muralidhar. - Special Correspondent

Dry weather prevails

HYDERABAD: Temperatures in the State, both day and night, remained largely unchanged in the State on Friday. Weather, however, was dry in the State. Kadapa recorded the highest day temperature of the State during the 24-hour period ending this morning, at 41 degree Celsius. According to a forecast, the dry weather will continue in the State on Saturday also. - Special Correspondent
