Now winds of change across Delhi University

Lakshmi B. Ghosh

The idea is to improve academic standards and make everyone on the campus accountable

NEW DELHI: Delhi University is all set to make everyone on the campus accountable. To evolve ways of improving academic programmes and ensuring accountability among all sections of the university, a new committee has been set up for academic reforms and accountability.

Headed by Dr. Neera Chandoke, the six-member committee has five sub-committees under it, including one to assess the success of the internal assessment experiment in colleges on the basis of feedback from students.

Looking into the matter of accountability will be the sub-committee on setting norms of professional ethics and creating accountability among all sections of the university. ``The idea is to put everyone in the university in their place of work. Although the university ordinances do have rules explaining the accountability of teachers and administrators, they are not all placed in one place. What we are looking at is putting all these rules in an organised way so implementing them will be easy,'' explains Dr. Barkatullah Khan, a member of the committee.

With curriculum revision being one of the major initiatives of the university in recent times, one of the sub-committee has been set up to evolve procedures for a continuous revision of curriculum. It will look at various ways in which new areas and developments can be integrated into courses to make them more relevant. Looking into the matter of "student attendance in postgraduate courses" will be the second committee, which has been deliberating whether students should be given marks on the basis of a certain percentage of attendance as is done now in undergraduate courses.

Giving students a chance to be part of the academic changes will be the sub-committee on student feedback on courses and coursework, which will for the first time take into account the students' experience to review the much talked about internal assessment scheme. A sub-committee has also been set up for innovation in teaching at the postgraduate level and sharing of faculty resources between departments and colleges.
