Centre to import 30 lakh tonnes of wheat
Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI:
The Centre will import 30 lakh tonnes of wheat on government account and give a bonus of Rs. 50 a quintal on the minimum support price (Rs. 650 a quintal) for procurement for the Targeted Distribution System.
The decision was taken "to build a buffer stock so as to maintain food security," Food and Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar said after a meeting with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh here on Friday.
Earlier permission was given to the private trade for import of five lakh tonnes of wheat for the southern States.
