Seven persons named for art, culture awards

Shantala Natya Award for Leela Ramanathan

BANGALORE: Noted tabla player Dattatreya Sadashiva Garud and the veteran exponent of classical dance Leela Ramanathan are among the seven distinguished persons in the fields of art and music in the State who have been selected for the awards instituted by the Directorate of Kannada and Culture.

The awards are for 2005 and they are T. Chowdiah Award, Kanaka-Purandara Award, Dhana Chintamani Award, Dr. Gubbi Veeranna Award, Santashishunala Sharief Award, Jakkanachari Award, and Shantala Natya Award.

Mr. Garud has been selected for the T. Chowdiah Award. The Chowdiah Award is a national-level award presented every year to musicians. A committee headed by G. Shyamala G. Bhave selected Mr. Garud for the award.

The Kanaka-Purandara Award for Gamaka has gone to B.S.S. Kaushik. A committee headed by Pandit Vasantha Kanakapura, Dharwad, selected him.

The Dhana Chintamani Award for women has been given to Veena Shanteshwar of Dharwad.

The other winners are: Renukamma Muragod of Belgaum — Dr. Gubbi Veeranna Award for theatre ; Eshwarappa Minaji of Gokak — Santashishunala Sharief Award for light music; C. Siddalingaiah of Mysore — Jakkanachari Award for sculpture; Leela Ramanathan (nee Bhaskaraiah) of Bangalore — Shantala Natya Award for dance.
