UDHAGAMANDALAM: The AIADMK Government will continue to stand by small tea growers of the Nilgiris, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa said on Saturday. Addressing a meeting to seek support for AIADMK candidate K.N. Dhorai, she said that when the growers were in trouble, she had implemented the small tea growers' protection scheme and given subsidy at the rate of Rs. 2,800 per acre. The scheme, which had benefited 50, 139 growers, was extended. Ms. Jayalalithaa said if voted back to power, she would do everything possible to find a solution to the problems of the growers. The sales tax on tea, which her Government had slashed earlier, would be brought down further. An agency would be created to look into the problems of the growers, she said.
