MYSORE: It is a journey into the world of rocks and minerals whose history is as old as the history of the Earth. The exhibition on rocks and minerals under the "Marvels of Nature" series, which was inaugurated recently at the Regional Museum of Natural History in Mysore, is sure to lure one into the realms of geology and geography. The exhibition will be on for another month and is a one-stop source of knowledge about the planet and the world beneath the surface. On display are different specimen of rocks and minerals with adequate information about their formation process, their use and the region where they are found. For the layman, Taj Mahal may be a structure in white marble but not many are aware that it is nothing but metamorphosed limestone. One may often wonder at the massive boulders which have cracks in which long roots of plants and trees penetrate. Over a period of time, the rocks crumble and are disintegrated by natural agents such as wind, temperature, frost, and by the underground water through a process called weathering. Ultimately, weathering leads to erosion and millions of years later, these rocks are reduced to soil. The exhibition is turning out to be a big draw among tourists.
