MUMBAI: Leaders of political parties on Saturday made a beeline for the Hinduja Hospital here, where Bharatiya Janata Party general secretary Pramod Mahajan is fighting for his life after having been shot by his younger brother.

Within a few hours of his admission to the hospital, media teams and BJP workers jammed the area. The crowd swelled after surgery was done on Mr. Mahajan by early afternoon. As doctors expressed concern over excess loss of blood, BJP workers lined up to donate blood.

Senior BJP leader L. K. Advani suspended his Bharat Suraksha Yatra and came here to see Mr. Mahajan.

He said: "According to the medical bulletin, you can see that Pramod's condition is critical. We can only pray that he recovers fully and soon." He left for Raipur shortly after the visit.

Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar is among the senior leaders who visited the hospital.

BJP vice-president M. Venkaiah Naidu said: "We are shell-shocked. We pray to God for his speedy recovery. He is under observation and there is nothing more to say now."

Another party leader, Sushma Swaraj, said: "We are praying. It's now people's prayers and doctors' treatment which should show results."

Maharashtra BJP leader Gopinath Munde, who is also Mr. Mahajan's brother-in-law; party spokesmen Prakash Javdekar and Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi; the former Union Ministers, Ram Naik and Murli Manohar Joshi; and others from the BJP came to the hospital.

Raj Thackeray, chief of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, and Shiv Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray were also present there. Among the other visitors were film and television personalities and Rajya Sabha MP and actress Hema Malini. The police had a tough time cordoning off the hospital entrance.

    Security

For reasons of security and traffic regulation, one side of the road leading to the hospital was blocked.
