MAINTAINING CLEANLINESS: Government officials cleaning the Chamundi Hills area on Saturday as part of World Earth Day.
MYSORE: Government officials and volunteers cleared garbage scattered atop the Chamundi Hills on Saturday as part of World Earth Day celebrations. The officials branched out into four groups to clear the garbage in the morning after Deputy Commissioner S. Selvakumar inaugurated World Earth Day activities. Each team was entrusted to clear garbage for a distance of one km along the road leading to the temple. Shopkeepers were provided with dustbins to collect garbage and segregate it, as the hill area has been declared as a plastic-free zone. Besides students who volunteered to clear the garbage, officials from the district administration and the departments of Revenue, Forest and Education joined in the efforts of the staff of Chamundeshwari Temple, Karnataka State Pollution Control Board and the gram panchayat to clear the garbage. The officials held placards which highlighted the need to save the earth from pollution and carried tips on keeping the environment clean. Besides the deputy commissioner, Mayor Bharathi, Mysore Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer K.R. Niranjan, Mysore City Corporation Commissioner K.N. Chandrashekar and other senior government officials participated.
Litter free zone
Later, Mr. Selvakumar participated in an awareness jatha from K.R. Circle. He told presspersons that D. Devaraja Urs Road would shortly be declared as litter-free zone. He called upon the public and traders to cooperate in the efforts of the administration to keep the city clean. The administration would deploy two mobile exhibition vehicles belonging to Karnataka State Pollution Control Board, which would go around the City to crate awareness against pollution. The two mobile exhibitions would be in the city for about a month, he added. Mr. Selvakumar and Ms. Bharathi participated in tree planting programme at K.C. Layout Park, during which nearly 50 saplings were planted. The plants would be tendered by K.C. Layout Residents' Welfare Association, officials said.
