72.52 per cent polling in Alappuzha

Isolated incidents of violence in the Kuttanad constituency

ALAPPUZHA: Alappuzha district recorded 72.52 per cent polling in the Assembly elections held on Saturday, according to the statistics of the Election Commission.

The election was generally peaceful in the district except for isolated incidents of violence in the Kuttanad constituency.

In a majority of constituencies, the polling began on a brisk note. The constituencies of Kuttanad, Mavelikkara, Kayamkulam and Haripad witnessed brisk polling till afternoon and it slowed down in the final hours. However, polling which began on a dull note at Pandalam went up after noon.

As many as six persons were injured in poll-related violence at Kavalam and Champakkulam in Kuttanad. All the injured are UDF workers.

Those injured at Kavalam are Kuttanad North Block committee president of the Congress K. Gopakumar, Kuttanad election campaign committee treasurer of the UDF Jose Kavanal and a UDF worker Aasarisseril Mony.

A group of persons, suspected to be LDF workers, attacked them with iron rods when they reached Kavalam to enquire about an attack on a UDF campaign office, UDF leaders said.

Mr. Gopakumar and Mr. Jose were admitted to Kottayam

Medical College and Mr. Mony to Changanassery Taluk Hospital. In another incident of violence at Champakkulam, UDF workers P. Ravindran, Sino Joseph and P. Jomon suffered minor injuries.
