Media persons observe "Black Day"

NEW DELHI: Wearing black badges, media persons observed a "Black Day" in the Capital on Saturday protesting against increasing assaults on journalists and curbs on freedom of the Press in the country.

Organised by the Delhi Union of Journalists, the meeting passed a resolution calling for an end to Press-bashing and demanding insurance cover for media persons.

Bal Bhavan celebrates Earth Day

NEW DELHI: The National Bal Bhavan on Saturday observed Earth Day by launching a nation-wide programme in all its State Bal Bhavans and Tribal Bal Bhavan Kendras.

A number of children participated in poster-making, slogan-writing and other activities at Bal Bhavans across the country. In Delhi, children of Mandi village and St. John's Convent celebrated Earth Day by watching a documentary on "Chipko Movement-Revisited".

Oriental Education Foundation

NEW DELHI: Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit inaugurated the Dr. Giridhari Lal Shastri Oriental Education Foundation at a function here on Saturday. Education Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely presided.

Speaking on this occasion, Ms. Dikshit described Sanskrit as a scientific language with a rich culture. She lauded the role of the Delhi Sanskrit Academy in popularising the language, adding that the Giridhari Lal Shastri Oriental Education Foundation had been set up to encourage students to learn Sanskrit.

Mock fire exercise

NEW DELHI: The New Delhi Municipal Council's fire department organised a mock fire exercise at Akbar Bhavan in Chanakyapuri earlier this week as part of ``Fire Week'' celebrations.

Union Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs Joint Secretary B. B. Tyagi witnessed the exercise. The staff displayed rescue operations in high-rise buildings, sliding by stretchers, flying fox and extinguishing fire by automatic sprinkler system.

Office shifted

NEW DELHI: The Sub-Regional Office of the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation, Delhi North, at Gupta Complex in Inderlok has shifted to a new building at 28 Wazirpur Industrial Area, Delhi-110052, an official release said.
