CHENNAI: The online trading of pulses has created an artificial scarcity for black gram in the market, the Chennai Appala Urpathiyalargal Nala Sangam has said. Pointing out that the black gram rates have nearly doubled during the past six months, V.K. Surendran, general secretary of the association, said it threatened to throw thousands of employees out of work. He called upon the Central and State Governments to make efforts to arrest the price rise and ensure that the prices were stabilised at the earlier rate for at least six months. Mr. Surendran said a 100-kg bag of black gram, which was available for Rs.2,800 about six months ago, cost about Rs.5,400 now. This steep increase in price has rendered appalam production an unviable profession, he said.
