NEW DELHI: The Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, is now looking at introducing some new sops to attract more students towards its research programmes. From high value scholarships to summer internships, the premier institute says it wants to make research a more attractive option for students. "The country needs more students to take up science and technology. We do get a large number of students for our postgraduate and research programmes, but we would like to see the numbers increase further and have been looking at how to make research more attractive,'' said IIT Delhi Director Surendra Prasad at a press conference here on Saturday. The Institute is further encouraging the industry to share its needs with students so that they are better prepared and informed, said Prof. Prasad. Also, inaugurated on Saturday was "I2Tech'', an IIT Open House showcasing the institute's research and development activities. "The open house is an attempt to keep the public informed about the work being done on the campus. We received a very good response last year with the public and industry showing a lot of interest in the works. Not all may lead to a deal or bargain but then we are not looking at direct impact. It is a platform to show the skills generated,'' Prof. Prasad added. An annual event, it saw over 200 exhibits and demos by students from various departments. Also held were two talk sessions on "High-tech to grassroots: Technology for village industry'' and "Bio-informatics for better medicine: Challenges and opportunities''. On display were various cutting edge research objects such as bio-informatics software, bio-diesel operated cars, medical textiles, projects on nano-science and technology, surgical simulations for knee surgery and even appliance identifier, leaves collector and smart cane for the visually impaired.
