dated April 24, 1956: Indo-Pak relations

Prime Minister Nehru reiterated in Patna on April 22 that India had nothing against Pakistan and that she was always prepared to extend her hand of friendship to her neighbour. It was a matter of great regret that relations between the two countries were strained over the question of Kashmir. Accusing the leadership of Pakistan for this state of affairs, he said the masses of Pakistan, who were then all Indians, took a big part in our fight for freedom. But the leaders of Pakistan, the Muslim League leaders, who were at the helm of affairs when Pakistan was created out of India, were opposed to the British quitting India. There were leaders, though not in power, who made tremendous sacrifices during the fight for freedom. Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan was one such leader.
