KOCHI: Lifeway Solar, in association with the Rotary Club of Cochin Midtown, recently held a painting competition for schoolchildren on the theme `Solar energy for humanity.' The event was part of an awareness drive on solar energy undertaken by the Government and non-Governmental organisations. An exhibition was also conducted as part of the event. The exhibition showcased various instruments working on solar energy. These include the solar milking machine and body massager. Owner of Lifeway Solar K. Georgekutty said the message of solar energy should be taken to the children. Solar energy continues to remain underutilised, he said. More efforts should be made to promote solar energy, said G. Sivaramakrishnan, another entrepreneur. Several Government offices make use of solar energy for their energy requirements. This should be emulated by more workplaces across the country, he added. The Government is offering loans at low interest rate through banks for purchase of solar energy-based equipment. Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency (IREDA) is involved in the programme. Grants are being sanctioned to local bodies to encourage the installation of solar energy-based equipment.
