`Public patronage needed for art'

Staff Correspondent

  • Proposal sent to include dance and music in school curriculum
  • M.P. Prakash says Bellary has produced many great composers

BELLARY: Rajashekar Mansur, chairman of the Karnataka Sangeet Nrutya Academy, has stressed on the need for public patronage to promote art and culture.

Mr. Mansur was speaking at the silver jubilee celebrations of Natya Bharati Nrutya Kalashale here on Saturday.

He was of the view that the age-old culture of the country was so deep-rooted that globalisation could not influence it.

"The Government has been extending its help in its own limited way. In Europe, connoisseurs have been promoting art, music and dance by attending the programme and by way of purchasing tickets," he said.

Mr. Mansur said the academy had sent a proposal to the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development to include dance and music in the school syllabus so that children could pursue the art form of their choice. A decision was yet to be taken, he said.

The former Deputy Chief Minister and Janata Dal (Secular) State unit president M.P. Prakash, who inaugurated the function, said it was a matter of pride that Bellary district was the homeland of art, culture and tradition.

He paid tributes to great saint composers, including Purandaradasa, and highlighted the contributions of Bellary Raghava, Dharmavaram Krishnamachayarulu, Joladarashi Doddanagowda (well-known theatre personalities of yesteryear), Subhadramma Mansur (music and theatre), and Belagal Veeranna (leather puppetry) from Bellary district to promote art and culture.

Both of them felicitated Dr. R. Radhakrishna (ENT), Mr. Veeranna, Ms. Kamalamma (dancer and social worker) and Vishal Hegde,

    film actor.

Vanmala Kulkarni, convenor of the institution, and K.M. Vishwanath, a mine owner, were present.

Suresh Shetty, president of the institution, welcomed the gathering.
