Umar Farooq may meet Manmohan for talks: Soz

Shujaat Bukhari

Government committed to strengthening peace process

  • Advocates role for political parties as well
  • Assures to allocate funds for Neelnag

SRINAGAR: With almost all separatists not inclined to join the second roundtable on Kashmir, Union Water Resources Minister and CWC member Saifuddin Soz on Sunday said the moderate Hurriyat Conference led by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq may hold the second round of talks with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, ahead of the roundtable.

Speaking to The Hindu , Prof. Soz said the UPA Government was committed to strengthening the dialogue process within Kashmir as also with Pakistan to resolve the issue. ``There is no ambiguity on continuing the dialogue with all the alienated people in Kashmir. Dr. Singh as well as Congress president Sonia Gandhi is very keen to resolve the crisis through a dignified way which is dialogue,'' he said. ``The Prime Minister has already offered treaty of peace with Pakistan and that is enough to indicate how serious we are about the issue of normalisation.''

Prof. Soz, who played a vital role in facilitating the first round of talks between Hurriyat leaders and Prime Minister in September last, said without holding dialogue with those who are alienated, complete peace and tranquillity was not possible. He advocated a role for other political parties as well but at a different stage. Accompanied by senior Congress leaders Ghulam Nabi Monga and Bashir Ahmed Magray, Mr. Soz said there was no question of weakening the coalition Government. He asked Congress workers and leaders to support the coalition candidates in all three segments. Prof. Soz visited Neelnag a tourist spot in Budgam district on Sunday and announced that his Ministry would retrieve the lake and restore its pristine glory.

``We will work for de silting it and will conserve it. I am going to allot special funds for making Neelnag the best tourist resort,'' he said addressing public meeting at village Bazgoo.

Prof. Soz said his Ministry was working on a comprehensive plan to restore many sites of importance which were directly linked to water resources.

He said the UPA Government would fully support the coalition government in its plan for development and prosperity of the State.
