Jayalalithaa asked to explain stand on quota

KRISHNAGIRI: Pattali Makkal Katchi founder S. Ramadoss has asked Chief Minister Jayalalithaa to explain her stand on reservation for minorities in private firms and educational institutions. Dr. Ramadoss said the Chief Minister had been offering freebies to the electorate during campaigning and wanted to know her stand on reservation for SC/ST, MBC and BCs in private firms and for OBCs in IITs, IIMs and other Central universities announced by the Centre recently.

He charged Ms. Jayalalithaa with making false promises. On the announcement that employment opportunities would be provided to 32 lakhs persons, he said it was the AIADMK Government that had removed road mazdoors and other Government officials from service. — Staff Reporter

Congress, BJP leaders to campaign in State

CHENNAI: National leaders of the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party will visit Tamil Nadu this week to canvass votes for their respective fronts. On Monday, the BJP's former president L.K. Advani will go to Hosur and Thally Assembly constituencies to address meetings.

Two other former presidents M. Venkaiah Naidu and Bangaru Laxman will tour Madurai/Usilampatti and Namakkal. Former Union Ministers Shah Nawaz Hussain and Rajeev Pratap Rudy will campaign at Erode and Nagercoil, says Bandaru Dattatreya, party national secretary in charge of Tamil Nadu.

M. Krishnasswamy, Tamil Nadu Congress Committee chief, said on Tuesday, the party president Sonia Gandhi would address a rally at Pondicherry at 11-30 a.m; Madurai at 3-30 p.m. and in Chennai at 6 p.m.

The venue of the Chennai meeting would be Island Grounds. — Special Correspondent

Training on open source software

CHENNAI: A five-day southern regional training programme on open source software will be organised here from May 22. Participation in the programme is free, including at a conference organised as part of it on May 26 on the trends in open systems and their applications in enterprises. The software division of the Computer Society of India in association with CICC of Singapore, National Resource Centre for Free and Open Source Software of CDAC is organising the programme. It will be hosted by RMK Engineering College.

According to the organisers, the programme is free and open to members of the teaching faculty.

Persons from industry, government departments and other organisations are also eligible. Outstation participants will be provided accommodation at the college and travel cost will be met on production of tickets. Children's rally

KARAIKAL: More than 500 children from the tsunami-hit area of Keezhavanjur village in the district took out a rally on Saturday and observed `World Earth Day' highlighting `earth is our concern'.

The Centre for Environment and Development Alternatives (CEDA Trust), an NGO carrying out tsunami relief and rehabilitation works in the district in the Union Territory of Pondicherry organised the rally with the support of `Cordaid' of Netherland.

Carrying placards, the children raised slogans to protect the earth and create an awareness to plant trees to prevent natural disasters.

The children also took oath to preserve and protect the earth.

Pirated CDs seized

Tiruchi: Nintynine pirated Compact Discs of Tamil and English movies were seized at Burma Bazaar in Teppakulam here on Friday. One Karuppan was arrested, police sources here said.

Mettur level

Tiruchi: The water level at the Mettur dam stood at 112.38 feet on Sunday. The inflow was 1,933 cusecs and the outflow, 1,000 cusecs.

Power shutdown

TIRUNELVELI : Power supply in the following areas will be affected between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. on April 25 as special maintenance works are to be carried out at Palayamkottai sub-station.

According to the Executive Engineer (Urban), Tamil Nadu Electricity Board, O.S. Mohammed Sheriff, power supply would be affected at V.M. Minorities Federation to back DPA

SALEM: The Salem-Namakkal Minorities Federation has decided to back the DMK-led Democratic Progressive Alliance (DPA) in the Assembly elections. The Federation's decision, according to its president and Salem Bishop Rev. S. Singaroyan, was taken to "safeguard the interests of minorities and to retain the secular fabric of the country." - Special Correspondent

Federation to back DMK-led alliance

SALEM: The Salem-Namakkal Minorities Federation has decided to back the DMK-led Democratic Progressive Alliance (DPA) in the Assembly polls.

The Federation's decision, according to its president and Salem Bishop Rev. S. Singaroyan, was taken to

"safeguard the interests of minorities and to retain the secular fabric of the country."

It also asked the DPA parties to enact law for separate reservation for the minorities, inclusion of the Dalit Christians in the Scheduled List and releasing a white paper on the rights violations against the minorities etc.- Special Correspondent

Arrested for smuggling illicit liquor

SALEM: The Salem district Prohibition and Enforcement Wing personnel arrested two persons on charge of smuggling illicit liquor from Karnataka here on Saturday.

Police said that during a vehicle check up at Uthamachozhapuram near here, they intercepted a car and found 30 bottles of illicit liquor in it. Manoharan (42) of Annathanapatti and car driver Eshwaran (25) of Dharapuram have been arrested in this connection. They also seized the car used for the purpose. - Staff Reporter
