Ladakh landscape in its true splendour

Staff Reporter

MAGNIFICENT: A photograph by Ashok Lavasa.

NEW DELHI: An exhibition of photographs by Ashok Lavasa capturing the unique landscape of Ladakh in its true splendour in now on at Art Junction of Grand Intercontinental Hotel here.

While holidaying in Kashmir, Mr. Lavasa decided to take a trip to some of Ladakh's more remote and relatively unknown regions. The photographs on display are of the Zanskar region in the western part of the Ladakh valley, and of Pangong Lake that lies to the valley's east.

The Zanskar valley is roughly 500 km from Srinagar and does not see too many tourists due to poor roads and communication systems. Zanskar has been able to retain an unpolluted environment and the residents have learnt to live in perfect harmony with nature.

Mr. Lavasa has also photographed the Buddhist monastery of Rangdum, bringing out the beauty that can be found in the region's isolation. With these photographs, he hopes that this secluded area is recognised for its magnificence and its scope for becoming a tourist destination.

Pangong Lake, situated at about 14,000 ft above sea level, is a more popular destination for tourists. Landscape photographs show the lake flanked by mountains that reach out to azure skies. Mr. Lavasa has been able to capture the scene in inspiring images.

A keen photographer who has never received formal training in the art, Mr. Lavasa is also Resident Commissioner of the Haryana Government in New Delhi. He has been taking pictures for the past 15 years using a variety of cameras concentrating primarily on landscape photography. This is the first time that he has decided to display his photographs captured using a digital camera.

The exhibition is open up to April 30.
