Girl's death: youth gets 10 years RI

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: A fast-track court in Bangalore convicted a youth for abetting the suicide of a schoolgirl and sentenced him to 10 years rigorous imprisonment.

Praveen Reddy used to force Vasudha (14), a seventh standard student at St. Ann's School in Rajajinagar here, to love him. Vasudha, who had lost her father, was being brought up by her mother Vijaya Chamundeshwari, an employee in a private firm. They were residents of Okalipuram in Sriramapura police station limits.

According to the prosecution, Reddy used to follow the autorickshaw by which Vasudha was being dropped at school and pester her. He also used to go Vasudha's house when none of her family members were there and force her to come with him. Unable to bear the torture, she hanged herself in her house on April 1 after Reddy and his friend Ashok left after speaking to her.

It is said that when Vasudha's two brothers asked her before she ended her life why Reddy and Ashok had come, she told them that they had threatened her of an acid attack if she did not accompany them. A little while after that she committed suicide.

The judgment was passed by IV Fast Track Court Judge M. Ramesh Rao.
