Pat from Bush for voluntary work

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: Seventeen-year-old Anjana Chandran, an NRI, has won the appreciation of US President George Bush for voluntary work at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center and Blank Children's Hospital.

"It was the most amazing experience of my life," says Anjana of West Des Moines. Anjana is interested in a career in science or medicine. Mr. Bush presented her with a pin. She will get a signed photograph of the President.

"There is so much out there in the community. It may not seem like you are making a big difference, but you really are," says the Valley High School senior.

Anjana was named United Way's 2004 Outstanding Teen Volunteer in her community. She also volunteers for Valley's Tiger chapter of Habitat for Humanity.

Her grandfather, a World War II veteran and former assistant commissioner in the city police, K. Ramankutty Nair, says, "We are proud of the honour our teenaged granddaughter has been bestowed upon by the President."
