MUMBAI: Pravin Mahajan, who shot and injured his brother, Pramod, was on Sunday remanded to police custody till April 29. After he surrendered to the police on Saturday morning, he gave a written statement to them. He was placed under arrest and an FIR registered. An investigating team visited his residence on Sunday and reportedly recorded a statement from his wife, Sarangi. Pravin was produced at the Bhoiwada court in central Mumbai before Metropolitan Magistrate M. N. Bondre in the morning. He appeared calm and composed and told the court that he had no complaints. Prosecution asked for police custody to investigate the motive According to the statement given to the police, Pravin had said that he was upset about the way his older brother, Pramod was treating him. He said Pramod did not meet him and used to ask him to meet his personal assistants who also used to behave badly towards him. He said that he was unhappy about this for sometime and tried to meet his brother early morning yesterday so that he would not be refused a meeting. Defence lawyer Nandkumar Rajurkar submitted that Pravin was mentally unstable and that he should be taken into judicial custody. He urged the court to conduct psychiatric tests and later send him to police custody, if needed. Prosecution refuted the claim of a psychological disorder and said Pravin knew what he was doing otherwise a person would not travel all the way from Thane with a loaded weapon. It said the crime was premeditated and police custody was needed to find out the real motive. The magistrate turned down the plea of advocate Rajurkar and remanded him to police custody. There will not be any psychiatric tests but routine medical check up will be conducted. Pravin has been charged under Section 307 (attempt to murder) and Section 450 (criminal trespass with intention to commit serious crime punishable with life imprisonment) of the Indian Penal Code and under Section 3 of the Arms Act (misuse of licensed weapon).
