Decision on bus fare hike soon: Minister

HASSAN: Minister for Transport N. Cheluvaraya Swamy said here on Saturday that a final decision on raising bus fares would be taken before April 30, after discussing the matter with Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy.

Mr. Cheluvarayaswamy said it had become inevitable for the KSRTC to hike the bus fares in view of the rise in fuel prices.

BJP leaders to resume campaigning

BANGALORE: After a brief break when many of the BJP leaders rushed to Mumbai to see party leader Pramod Mahajan who has been hospitalised, most of them have decided to resume their campaigning and yatras.

BJP leader M. Venkaiah Naidu told presspersons here on Sunday that Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha L.K. Advani, and BJP president Rajnath Singh would resume their yatras and election campaigning.

`Cities being ruined'

Bangalore: In the name of development and urbanisation, the Government was creating more urban poor, Y.J. Rajendra, vice-president, PUCL, said here on Sunday.

Speaking at a seminar on "The Impact of Globalisation: A Human Rights Perspective," Mr. Rajendra said the Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission was ruining the cities in India and was aimed to benefit the upper classes.

Human chain formed

GULBARGA: The agitating Karnataka State Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe Government and Quasi Government Daily Wage Workers' Association on Sunday staged a human chain protest in front of the Vallabhbhai Patel Chowk in Gulbarga demanding regularisation of services of more than 17,000 daily wage earners working in different government departments. The agitation was led by association president Chandrasekhar Hiremath. He will begin his indefinite hunger strike in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office on Monday. — Special Correspondent

Killed in road accident

Raichur: A person died on the spot and four were injured when a tractor hit the autorickshaw in which they were travelling, near Katlatkur village near here on Sunday. The police identified the deceased as Honnappa Sali (16). Thimmappa, Honnappa, Tayamma and Zindamma, who were injured, have been admitted at the district civil hospital. The Raichur Rural police have registered a case. — Staff Correspondent

MYSORE: Bharateeya Samsrkuthi Vidya Kendra will conduct classes and competitions and examinations in the next few months to mark its anniversary. Couple arrested for marketing scandal

PANAJI: Sunil Khaparde (44) and his wife Mamata Khaparde (35), wanted by the Maharashtra Police in eight cheating cases in a "chain-marketing scandal" of 2003, which hit Pune and Nagpur, involving Rs. 12 crores, were arrested on Saturday by the Goa police at Porvorim in North Goa.

The couple, staying in a rented house at Porvorim, was working in a hotel, the police said. They were later handed over to the Nagpur Police. — Special Correspondent
