"Continue struggle against `anti-people' development"

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: A public meeting organised by Janhastakshep on "Displacement: Development or Destruction" unanimously resolved to extend full support to displaced communities and continue its struggle against "anti-people" developmental schemes. Several senior academicians and human rights activists attended the meeting here in the Capital this past week to deliberate on the issue of public property and community resources being sold by the Government to serve the private interests.

"For our Government, development is only measured by increase in Gross Domestic Product," said Supreme Court advocate Prashant Bhushan. He described how propaganda could be used by the Government to make people believe anything, as in the case of the Sardar Sarovar project is Gujarat. Manoranjan Mohanty, former Political Science professor at Delhi University said: "India's tribal community has a collective right over the resources of an area. If this right is taken away, it is oppression of the highest order." Convenor of Lok Pakhya Rajendra Shadangi said: "We are not just fighting against displacement but also against the trend of anti-people industrialisation."
