CHENNAI: The Institution of Engineers (IIE) plans to coordinate with various State Governments to implement quality systems in the hospital, hospitality and food processing sectors. The Safety and Quality Forum of the IIE would oversee the implementation of systems that would focus on making these sectors globally competitive and oriented towards customer satisfaction, Pradeep Chaturvedi, chairman of the Forum, told a press conference on Saturday. It is also proposed to hold an annual convention on quality every year in South India and hold quarterly reviews of the progress being made on this front across industries. Though IT was hogging the limelight, engineering remained one of the core areas of economic development. Annual salary growth for the last three years in the engineering sector was between 10 per cent and 12 per cent. Net domestic production in the sector had registered a 0 per cent growth, and injuries were down from 81,000 to 54,000 cases (or 12.5 per thousand employees to 10 per thousand employees) during the period. In the automobile segment, accidents had dropped from 80 per thousand vehicles to 61 per thousand vehicles and deaths lowered from 16 per thousand to 13 per thousand, Mr. Chaturvedi said. As part of its drive on quality, the IIE organised a two-day seminar on `Achieving business excellence through Total Quality Management' at which several organisations were honoured for excellence in quality on the basis of a survey conducted by the Safety and Quality Forum. According to Mr. Chaturvedi, after a brief hiatus, TQM concepts were back in vogue in company boardrooms. T.M. Gunaraja, seminar convener, said more companies were realising that investment in quality systems brought down production costs, improved efficiency and lowered price for consumers.
