CHENNAI: It is not unusual for people from different parties with different sets of belief to come together on a platform to speak. But the speakers who had gathered at a public meeting on elections organised by the Rajaji Centre for Public Affairs and the Indian Liberal Group on Sunday displayed an unusual camaraderie. The speakers included CPI(M) central committee member T.K. Rangarajan, DMK organising secretary T.K.S. Elangovan, TNCC general secretary A. Gopanna, K. Subbu from the AIADMK and Mylapore constituency independent candidate Narayanan. Though the politicians spoke vociferously for their parties, they seemed to enjoy the humour in the speeches of those with whom they shared the stage. They even took a dig at each other. There was no mudslinging. Nor were there any angry outbursts. The audience also enjoyed an interactive session with the politicians. Issues such as the government employees strike and corruption in government were debated. G. Narayanaswamy, president, Rajaji Centre for Public Affairs, said that more such public meetings would be organised. V. Venkatagiri, trustee, said such friendly meetings were quite common in north India.
