Teegala hits back at Chanderji's diatribe

Mayor says there's no need for Deputy Mayor's presence during inspections

  • Mayor ridicules Chanderji's argument on non-development
  • Denies the charge that no meeting has been held in 6 months
  • Claims credit for city's impressive growth during his tenure

HYDERABAD: Stung by Deputy Mayor Subash Chanderji's diatribe against him, Mayor Teegala Krishna Reddy on Sunday asserted his standing in the MCH by stating that there was no need for him to invite the Deputy Mayor for inspections or to provide any information.

"I am directly elected by people whereas he (Deputy Mayor) is elected by corporators," he said. Mr. Krishna Reddy said when many national and international visitors were hailing the progress made by the twin cities in recent times it was not fair for Mr. Chanderji to argue that there had been no development.

He affirmed that it was not necessary to get every issue discussed and approved by the general body of MCH's elected council. Civic issues, civil works and people's problems could well be discussed and action taken by the ward and standing committees and also by officials at different levels, he maintained.

Condemning the charges made by the Deputy Mayor `for not conducting' general body meetings regularly and for allegedly ignoring civic problems, Mr. Krishna Reddy pointed out that not a single file was pending to be sent to the Government after the general body's approval.

General body meetings were not conducted whenever Parliament or the Assembly was in session.

Denying that no meeting was held in the last six months, he said that an extraordinary meeting and an urgent meeting of the council were held in January this year.

If further meetings were not held later, it was only because of Parliament/Assembly sessions and Praja Patham programme where officials' participation was necessary, he reasoned.

The Mayor took pride in the fact that the city had improved its ranking to five from 13 and had won awards like `Clean and Green city,' `Best lighting' for successive years during his tenure and as when he was Vice-Chairman of the Hyderabad Urban Development Authority.
