HYDERABAD: The Government is planning to evolve a policy to check unregistered packaged drinking water units in the State. Speaking at a symposium on `Packaged drinking water and Bureau of Indian Standards hallmarking scheme on gold jewellery' organised by the Department of Consumer Affairs here, Civil Supplies Commissioner Bhanwarlal said consumption of water manufactured by non-BIS firms was causing health problems. Referring to an observation made by a delegate from Prakasam district that 50 non-BIS firms were functioning in the district, he said that there were reports of such units operating in Krishna, Visakhapatnam, Nellore and Warangal districts as well. BIS Joint Director P.V. Indrasena Rao, president of State Packaged Drinking Water Units' Association Govardhan Reddy made presentations. Chief Water Analyst at the Institute of Preventive Medicine G. Chinnakeshavulu spoke.
