Bangalore: Unless untouchability is rooted out, Hindu society will not progress, said Subhash Bharani, Additional Director-General of Police (Law and Order). He was speaking at the function organised by Sri Guruji (M.S. Golwalkar) Birth Centenary Samiti here on Sunday. "Many people asked me why I am participating in the programme organised by an organisation supported by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). "However, I am happy to be participating in a programme that has been launched to create awareness about the social evil. People have to make concerted efforts to root it out," Mr. Bharani said. He said that those who continue to practise casteism and untouchability were committing sins. The entire social system had to change, he added. Mr. Bharani asked why no mathadipathi came forward when atrocities were committed against Dalits. "How can they head a religious institution when they have no sense of social justice?" he asked. He urged all to unite and work together to eradicate the evil of untouchability. B.V. Vasanthakumar, State convenor of Harmony Forum, said the Dalit movement lost its momentum when the downtrodden came under the influence of Marxists rather than the precepts of B.R. Ambedkar. "People have come to believe that rituals and religious practices are the basis of Hindutva. This is a wrong notion," he said. Dr. Vasanthakumar said that Hinduism had a wide and deep philosophy, according to which all were equal. Buddha, Basaveshwara, Allamma Prabhu, Ambedkar, Mahatma Gandhi and M.S. Golwalkar fought to root out untouchability from society, he added. Earlier, over 3,000 RSS workers took out a "Run for social harmony' from the Vidhana Soudha to the Town Hall. Yallappa Reddy, president of the samiti; Vijayalakshmi Deshmaane, M. Venkataramu, and T. Venkataswamy, members, were present.
