Bangalore: Hollywood actress Sharon Stone went through this procedure. Well, there is nothing glamorous about `stroke,' a condition wherein blood supply to the brain is interrupted or when a blood vessel in the brain bursts. But "endovascular coiling" for treating brain aneurysms, a ballooning out of the wall of an artery in the brain causing stroke, is fast emerging as a preferred treatment for stroke patients as against conventional surgery, says Dileep R. Yavagal, co-director, Neuroendovascular Division and Assistant Professor, Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery at The Neurosciences Institute of Albany Medical Center in Albany, New York.

Dr. Yavagal was in the city recently to make a presentation on endovascular coiling for treatment of brain aneurysms at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS). "Even though the number of cases where this treatment was chosen is not many, there is increasing interest in the field and there are ongoing clinical trials in the U.S. to check the efficacy of this procedure. The initial results have been encouraging," he said.
