Heartrending

The report "Malnutrition, a bane in Thane district," accompanied by the photograph of a malnourished two-year-old (April 21), is heartrending. It is a shame that severe malnutrition prevails in the country amidst claims of development and progress.

It is important for the Government to immediately intervene in Thane, particularly in tribal areas such as Jawhar plagued by chronic malnutrition. Our claims of progress are rendered meaningless when some sections lead such pathetic lives.

The photograph made me shudder. In all States, there are many Manojs, about whom our rulers do not care (engrossed as they are in clinging to power). It is unfortunate that no political party cares for the really poor, backward, and malnourished.

Child deaths due to malnutrition in Maharashtra are nothing new but continued official apathy and denial of the situation are indeed shocking. Children below six are a neglected lot and even the Integrated Child Development Scheme is simply unable to cater to the huge and differential needs in various parts of the country. It is time the Government woke up to its obligation under the various international treaties it has ratified, which hold the state responsible for ensuring the survival and development of every child. I hope the image stirs officials into taking immediate action.

Archana Mehendale,
Bangalore
