DINDIGUL: Chennai Telephones lifted the Cauvery Ammal Memorial Trophy defeating Southern Railway, Chennai, 88-87 in the last match of the semifinal round robin league of the 14th annual State-level open basketball tournament conducted by Cauvery Ammal Basketball Club at the Government HSS ground, Vadamadurai, near here, on Sunday. Chennai Telephones had an all-win record in the league while Southern Railway, which finished runner up, losing only to Telephones. Telephones made a rousing start to lead 22-14 at the end of the first quarter, with Sivarajan and Gokul scoring regularly. But Railway bounced back as Bernard Philips and Pasupathy found their range. At half time Railway levelled the score at 35-all. From then on, it was basket for basket with leads changing often. At the end of the third quarter, it was 58-58 and with four seconds to go for the final whistle, Telephones led 72-70. But Pasupathy converted two free throws amidst great tension and excitement to level 72-all and take the game to extra time. In the extra time, Telephones squeezed through eventually. Port Trust, Tuticorin, which beat Sethu Institute of Technology, Kariapatti 58-29 in the other match for its only win, finished third. Special awards: Mohanraj (Telephones), Pasupathy (S. Rly), Rathinaraj (Port Trust), Muthukumar (SIT). The results: Chennai Telephones 88 (Sivarajan 28, Gokul 24, Saravanakumar 24) bt Southern Railway 87 (Bernard Philips 20, Pasupathy 20, Saravanan 18). Port Trust, Tuticorin 58 (Rathinaraj 28, Senthilkumar 24) bt Sethu Institute of Technology 29 (Dominic Joe 12, Mohan 10).
