24-hour relay fast by CPI (M)

Staff Reporter

NIZAMABAD: Communist Party of India (Marxist) staged a 24-hour relay hunger strike near the Collectorate on Monday, demanding that the district administration sanction permanent houses to all eligible poor people, withdraw its move to fix water meters and allocate special fund for the development of slums and dalit colonies.

The party also demanded that distribution of ration be continued to the cardholders while new cards were being issued. Ration distribution should not be suspended under the pretext that new cards were being issued.

House sites

Speaking on the occasion, town secretary Ramesh Babu said though the poor had been waging a struggle for house sites and pucca houses for the last two years the administration had not responded.

The Congress leaders failed to keep their promises made to the people during elections, he alleged.

Ration cards

He said with the suspension of distribution of ration for the last two months a large number of poor were forced to starve even if they had been issued ration cards. Ration supply must be restored soon, he demanded.

About 10 CPI (M) activists sat on a 24-hour hunger strike, which will conclude at 11 a.m. on Tuesday.
