EXPERT ADVICE: Steven Dean (centre) vice-president of the Australian College of Surgery, comes out of J.J. Hospital in Mumbai after examining Pramod Mahajan on Monday. Photo: PTI
MUMBAI: Three days after his younger brother Pravin shot and injured him, Bharatiya Janata Party general secretary Pramod Mahajan continued to be critical on Monday. This despite the surgical intervention on Sunday night when the packs placed to check bleeding from the liver were removed. The 8 p.m. bulletin issued by the Hinduja Hospital said there was no improvement in his general condition and no new surgical intervention would be considered until his general condition stabilised. "He is being monitored closely for his pancreatic and hepatic injuries, in spite of the fact that liver bleeding has stopped," the bulletin said. Mr. Mahajan was put on dialysis as his kidneys did not function properly. Although bleeding from the liver was contained, it was of secondary priority. His general condition was poor as functioning of vital organs caused worry. Mr. Mahajan was still on ventilator and medication to support his blood pressure, the bulletin issued earlier in the day said. Steven Dean, an ortho-trauma specialist from Australia, examined Mr. Mahajan. A team of doctors from the U.K. flew in at the request of family members on Sunday. Mr. Mahajan's son, Rahul, and Gopinath Munde, his brother-in-law, have once again expressed satisfaction about the treatment given to him at the Hinduja Hospital. Some of those who called on Mr. Mahajan on Monday were BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi, Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar and Shiv Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray. The Mumbai Police have started interrogating Pravin. Pravin allegedly left his home in Thane at 5.30 a.m., but arrived at Pramod's house only around 7.30 a.m. Police are probing why he took so long to reach that place and whether he met anyone before reaching Worli. They are also recording statements of his family members. Others such as the domestic help and the watchman of Pravin's Thane residence are also being interrogated.
