CHENNAI: The 17th Kodai Nataka Vizha of Kartik Fine Arts was inaugurated by former Chief Election Commissioner T.S.Krishnamurthy here on Monday. Addressing the gathering, he said that dramas had a positive role to play in society as they could mould good citizens. At a time when a sense of frustration was prevailing in society, dramas could help build give confidence among people. It was unfortunate that dramas had lost their influence after the advent of television. The art form should not be allowed to fade away as it reflected the culture. He congratulated Kartik Fine Arts for organising the drama festival every year. Chairman of the Kartik Fine Arts L.Sabaretnam said eleven plays were to be staged during the festival. In addition to giving prizes to the best play and best artists, the sabha would give prizes to the best review of each play, he said. Secretary D.S.Ramanujam said the sabha organised about 200 music concerts, 100 dance programmes and 30 dramas every year. Best dramas selected by the sabha were staged by other sabhas in the city. Industrialist Nalli Kuppusami Chetti appealed to "rasikas" to encourage drama as it was an age-old art of the country.
