TNAU centres demanded

Staff Reporter

Coimbatore: Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) should start centres in Africa and South America to help farmers in these countries learn more about cultivation and lead prosperous lives, said the Chairman, Sakthi Group of Companies, N. Mahalingam, here on Monday.

Launching the Arutselvar Dr. N. Mahalingam Muthu Vizha Endowment Lecture series at the University, Mr. Mahalingam said that TNAU ought to capitalise on its exposure to international institutions.

"Our experience and success towards self-sufficiency in food production should help starving African countries," he said.

Indian scientists, farmers, community development staff and extension personnel had worked together to free the country from dependence on others for food.

Though the Indian farmer had benefited from science and technology, the challenge to bridge the gap between urban and rural areas still remained.

There was need to increase the income of village people, boost agricultural productivity, improve rural infrastructure and step up investment in farm and non-farm activities.
