Urban apathy in elections is not new. But what the leading candidates in the Ernakulam Assembly constituency are worried about is whether the voting percentage would fall to an all time low in this election. It is `business as usual' in Kochi city, which for a casual observer from outside, may look as if the voters are taking it easy. In spite of the campaigners trying to drum up support, the average voter in the city seems to be impervious to the appeals. Polling day falling on a weekend is also fraught with problems. Some of the upper middle class voters may fan out to cooler climes, especially with the kids having summer vacation. Ernakulam has always remained a low polling centre and this time too, matters would not be different, feels a party worker of a leading political front.
