Jaya Bachchan challenges disqualification
Legal Correspondent
New Delhi:
Jaya Bachchan has challenged in the Supreme Court the Presidential order disqualifying her Rajya Sabha membership on the Election Commission's opinion that she was holding an office of profit.
In her petition on Tuesday, the former Samajwadi MP said the complaint sent to President A.P.J. Kalam did not assert that she received any honorarium or remuneration as Chairperson of the Uttar Pradesh Film Development Council. In response to the Commission's notice, she specifically said the post and Cabinet status were only decorative and did not carry monetary benefits. The Commission did not give any finding that she received monetary gain, she said .
So the conclusion of her disqualification was unlawful and invalid.
