Coimbatore: Over 2,500 students from Coimbatore and parts of the Nilgiris, who had written SSLC and Plus Two examinations, thronged the Coimbatore Institute of Technology auditorium to attend a programme on career guidance, on Tuesday. The Tamil newspaper Daily Thanthi and Karpagam Educational Institutions had jointly organised the programme, `Vetri Nicchayam' (Success is certain), for youngsters to know about job-oriented courses. Almost equal numbers of boys and girls attended the one-day programme. Academics and representatives from various industries spoke on employment prospects in arts, science, engineering, technical training, medicine, civil services, hotel management, armed forces, law, computer science and biotechnology. Half-hour talks by speakers emphasised the importance of choosing the right career. The Vice-Chancellor of Bharathiar University, S. Sivasubramanian, opened the proceedings with a talk that highlighted the need to select recognised institutions that had adequate facilities and qualified staff. Kits presented to the participants contained an 80-page booklet brought out by the newspaper, giving details of colleges offering various courses, along with addresses and contact information. This was aimed at helping students choose suitable courses based on location of the institution and duration of the programme.
