Unwanted hype

The way television channels have hyped the attack on Pramod Mahajan and his subsequent hospitalisation for two days has crossed all limits of sanity. Almost all the channels dished out rubbish, and followed everyone who visited the Hinduja Hospital, the police station, Mr. Mahajan's home, and so on. They broke the same news over and over again. A channel even collaborated with an equally zealous mobile phone company to organise an SMS poll on whether Pravin Mahajan was mentally unsound or not. When will TV channels become professional?

Almost all television channels parked their cameras in front of the hospital. Some even reported that the bullets had been removed from Mr. Mahajan's body in spite of the doctors explaining that removal of bullets was not the priority, stopping the loss of blood was.

Whenever such incidents occur, all the news channels bombard viewers with drama and rhetoric. None of them is interested in giving quality news. Sensitivity or solemnity in coverage is totally lacking.

The attack on Mr. Mahajan by his brother is condemnable not only because it is a criminal act but also because it reflects how intolerant society has become. Much required patience to live a life within one's means is absent in many. All are anxious to live luxurious lives, and to further their fortunes. The Pravin-Pramod kind of fallout is nothing new and is probably taking place in every other family. Since it involved a prominent person, it came into the open.
