Tamil Nadu elections

The emergence of Lok Paritran, party of IITans, in Tamil Nadu elections, has come as a whiff of fresh air in the muddled politics of the State. It is indeed a laudable effort by the youngsters. Never mind if they are not able to win this time. It is the spirit of fighting for a cause that matters, and certainly over a period of time its impact will be felt.

The Lok Paritran seems to be heading in the right direction. While all other parties consider election a business, the party of youngsters has promised the much needed corruption-free governance. We hope this small group will soon revolutionise the political scene.

The results of the Assembly elections will be known in the next 16 days. All responsible citizens want an assurance, not a freebie, from DMK leader M. Karunanidhi and AIADMK leader Jayalalithaa. Both of them, if elected, should attend the Assembly even if their party does not form the government. They should not depute any of their senior leaders to be the Leader of the Opposition.

There was a time when politicians at least pretended they cared for the people. But looking at the latest breed that has switched loyalties, it is clear that the people are nowhere in politicians' scheme of things. MDMK leader Vaiko joined the AIADMK-led front because, as he claimed, he was not given enough respect by the DMK.

Now comes Rajya Sabha MP Sarath Kumar who claims he joined the AIADMK front because he and his community were not respected by the DMK, he was `insulted,' he was not allowed to give a bouquet to Sonia Gandhi, no one apologised ... and so the people should vote for the AIADMK.
