SIRSI: The National Horticulture Mission (NHM)- 2005-06, a Union Government project, will be implemented in Uttara Kannada district at a cost of Rs.1.9 crore, Krishna, Deputy Director of Horticulture, said in a in a press release on Tuesday. The NHM project would include production of seeds, extension of regions, processing, marketing facility and so on. Grafted mango plants and equipments worth Rs. 7,500 for each hectare would be given to farmers for transplantation to cultivate them in 100 hectares of land. For banana and pomegranate plantation, Rs. 7,500 will be given to farmers to cultivate them in 50 hectares. Hybrid seeds and fertilizers will be provided to cultivate cocoa in 200 hectares; Equipment worth Rs. 10,000 would be sanctioned to cultivate ginger and material worth Rs. 15,000 would be sanctioned to grow aromatic plants. Under watershed development unit, 50 per cent of the cost of constructing five agriculture tanks in horticultural farms would be provided to farmers. A sum of Rs. 10 lakh would be granted of the construction of public tanks in the district. For research in marketing fruits and vegetables, Rs. 3.75 lakh will be sanctioned. To create awareness, publicity and training programmes will be held in all the taluks of the district. Training would be provided to 40 farmers in the new technology, the press release added.
