Two Special Observers for Tamil Nadu

CHENNAI: Chief Electoral Officer Naresh Gupta on Tuesday said two Special Observers of the Election Commission would help the State election machinery in handling some difficult issues relating to the May 8 Assembly elections. He told reporters here that Satbir Silas Bedi and P.C. Kapoor would assume charge shortly. Being "eyes and ears of the EC," they would be looking after the election work in the State. They would help the State election authorities to see that the model code of conduct was enforced effectively, besides ensuring a free and fair poll. The Special Observers would send their reports directly to the Commission, Mr. Gupta said. — Special Correspondent

Special Officers' term extended

CHENNAI: The term of special officers in Kottakatchiyendal, Nattarmangalm, Keeripatti and Pappapatti village panchayats has been extended by six months — till October 24. An ordinance to this effect was issued by the Governor Surjit Singh Barnala on Monday. Elections to these panchayats, reserved for the Scheduled Castes, could not be held as caste Hindus demanded de-reservation of the local bodies and effectively prevented filing of nominations by Dalit candidates. — Special Correspondent

Visu joins AIADMK

SALEM: Film director and artist M.R. Viswanathan alais Visu, who has been telecasting the popular talk show `Arattai Arangam' on Sun TV has joined the All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) on Tuesday.

Accompanied by Mylapore AIADMK candidate S.Ve. Sekar, Mr. Visu met party supremo Jayalalithaa at Erode on Tuesday before she resumed the campaign for the day. Mr. Visu said the happenings in Sun TV had "pained his heart" and hence he quit. He also claimed that his contract with the Sun TV had come to an end. — Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Passport in respect of applications with the following details were despatched in the week ending April 21. Chennai city cases with file numbers up to A-006057/06 and submitted up to February 10, Chennai city cases submitted in speed post centres under W-series and submitted up to February 3, other district cases submitted in passport office with file numbers up to B-003061/06 and submitted up to February 1 and minor cases with file numbers up to F-003564/06 and submitted up to March 6. Passports for renewal with file numbers up to C-003073/06 and submitted up to January 31, renewals issued by other offices with file numbers up to V-000582/06 and submitted up to January 31 were also despatched. Pondicherry residents' application submitted at Pondicherry with file numbers up to P-000367/06 and submitted up to February 3, and Pondicherry residents application submitted in Chennai with file numbers up to P-102446/05 and submitted up to December 27, says a release. — Special Correspondent

Dies on the spot

ERODE: A 35-year-old man was killed in a road accident on Monday. According to the police, Kadirvel, a copra broker from Kangeyam, was riding on his moped, when an oncoming sand-laden lorry hit him along the Kangeyam - Coimbatore Main Road.

He was killed on the spot.

Killed in accident

SALEM: A 40-year-old man, who was injured in a road accident and admitted to the Salem Government Medical College Hospital, died here on Tuesday.

The police said that Mani of Sevvapet was hit by an autorickshaw while he was walking on the road here on Monday. - Staff Reporter

Seven injured

SALEM: Seven persons, including three women and an 11-month-old child, were injured when a car in which they were travelling collided with a private bus in Palikadai, near Omlaur, here on Monday. The police said that Krishanan of Kitchipalayam and his family members were returning after attending a function when the accident occurred.

The injured were admitted to a private hospital.

SALEM: A computer centre, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Midtown, was declared open at the Sourashtra Primary School here on Tuesday by

Youth killed in accident

TIRUNELVELI: A youth was killed in a road accident near here on Tuesday.

The police said Ayyappan (35) of South Rastha near Mela Seval was going towards Suththamalli in a two-wheeler. As the bike dashed against a bullock cart, he sustained serious injuries. Though he was rushed to the hospital, he died on the way. The police are investigating.

Free eye camp

TIRUNELVELI: Tamil Nadu Thawheedh Jamaath organised a free eye camp at Melapalayam on Sunday.

Renowned ophthalmologists Neetu and Jayanth Asish treated the patients. While 100 patients underwent free cataract surgery, more than 200 patients received spectacles at discounted price.

The State secretary of TNTJ, M. Shamsul Luha, coordinator of Aravind Eye Hospital, Subramanian, office-bearers of TNTJ, M. Asathullah, A. Syed Ibrahim participated.

Coolie commits suicide

Nagercoil: A coolie committed suicide by consuming poison. Raman Nadar of Mukilankudiyiruppu near South Tamaraikulam was suffering from acute stomach pain so that he took this extreme step.

Panchayat chief quits

KARUR: The Karur District Panchayat Chairman, Nallamuthu Duraisamy (AIADMK), resigned her post and joined the DMK on Monday. The DMK claimed that over 500 persons joined its ranks along with her.

Mettur level

Tiruchi: The water level at the Mettur dam stood at 112.31 feet on Tuesday. The inflow was 1,446 cusecs and the outflow, 2,000 cusecs.
