BUCHAREST (Romania): The River Danube rose on Tuesday to new record levels at an eastern port, and thousands more residents were evacuated from areas threatened by the surging waters of Europe's second longest river. By midday on Tuesday, 3,500 residents had been evacuated from the villages of Sarata and Bistret, and other communities in western Romania. About 10,000 were expected to be forced from their homes due to the floods. President Traian Basescu urged residents to leave the area, after dykes in the area broke. The army sent trucks to help residents transport their possessions. Evacuated residents were staying with friends and relatives, schools and other buildings. About 300 school pupils from the village of Rast resumed classes on Tuesday at a school 20 km away. AP
