Bus fare hike put on hold

BANGALORE: The State Government has decided against burdening the people with higher bus fares, Transport Minister N. Cheluvaraya Swamy has said.

He told presspersons here on Tuesday that after a discussion with Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy and Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa it was decided to withhold passing on the additional burden from the increase in diesel price to commuters for the present.

The `Avatar' scheme of reservation of seats in KSRTC buses will be launched on April 29. It will be similar to the railway reservation system. Tickets can be booked for any destination from any point in the State.

More bank branches to sell stamp papers

DHARWAD: Revenue Minister Jagadish Shettar has said that steps have been taken to make stamp papers available through 200 more branches of various banks in the State from May 1.

Addressing presspersons here on Tuesday after chairing a review meeting of the Karnataka Development Programme, he said stamp papers were being sold in 308 branches of State Bank of India (SBI), State Bank of Mysore (SBM) and State Bank of Hyderabad (SBH). From May 1, stamp papers would be available in another 100 branches of SBM, 70 branches of SBI and 30 branches of SBH. The Government was planning to hold discussions with senior bank officials in this regard, Mr. Shettar said. — Staff Correspondent

Scholar Doddahonnaiah mourned

TUMKUR: Janata Dal (Secular) MLAs D. Nagarajaiah and H. Ningappa, senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Anusuya Y.K.R. and Kunigal Town Municipal Council president K.L. Harish were among a number of leaders who paid their last respects to Doddahonnaiah, 82, Sanskrit scholar, at Alkere in Kunigal taluk on Tuesday. The scholar died on Monday.

Mr. Doddahonnaiah headed Kalabyraveshwara Samskrita and Veda Mahapathashala of Adichunchanagiri Math. He was awarded the `Rajya Prashasti' in 1981 for his erudition in Sanskrit.

Sri Balagangadharanatha Swamiji of Adichunchanagiri Math has mourned the death of Mr. Doddahonnaiah.

Youth arrested on murder charge

HASSAN: A youth has been arrested on charge of killing his father and stepmother in Koushika village of Hassan taluk.

According to the police, Manjunath attacked his father Venkate Gowda (48) and his stepmother Susheelamma (42) with a machete on Tuesday. Both of them died on the spot. Suresh, Susheelamma's son who got injured in the attack, has been admitted to hospital. The police said that family feud was the reason for the murder. Manjunath, who sped the scene, surrendered to the police later. — Staff Correspondent

Pedestrian run over by bus

HASSAN: A pedestrian was killed when she was run over by a Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation bus in Arkalgud on Tuesday. The Arkalgud Police said Lakshmamma (55) was killed when she was crossing

the road. A case has been registered in this regard.

HASSAN: Members of the district unit of National Federation of Telecom

Employees, Bharath Sanchar Nigam Limited, launched a relay hunger strike here on Tuesday, in response to a call given by the State unit

urging the authorities to stop "unwarranted, irrational

and illegal transfers." S.S. Nayak, the president of district unit, told press persons that those heading Secondary Switching Areas were irrationally transferring employees.

BHADRAVATI: Temples are sacred places which give peace of mind for people visiting them, said Sachidananda Valukeshwara Bharati Swamiji of Kudaly Sringeri Maha Samsthanam here on Monday. He was participating in a programme to consecrate the idol and " Kalashabhishekam" of Sri Gulamma Temple.

DHARWAD: Karnataka State Open University (KSOU) has organised contact programme for the first and final year students of M.A. Sociology from April 27 to May 1. Subject experts from Mysore will be conducting the programme.

Girl dies of snakebite

Sirsi: Sabina Shirhatti (13), a student of Little Flower Convent at Siddapur, died of snakebite on Sunday. She was plucking flowers in front of the girls' hostel when she was bitten by a snake. She died on her way to hospital. Police have registered a case.

Science workshop

GULBARGA: The District Science Centre here is organising an "Integrated Science Model Making Workshop" from May 5. High school students will be trained in model-making in subjects including physics, biotechnology and electronics. B.R. Viswanath, District Science Officer, said in a press release here on Tuesday that the course would be held for ten days from May 5. `Ban buntings'

MYSORE: The Association of Concerned and Informed Citizens of Mysore has urged the Mysore City Corporation to ban the display of banners and buntings around K.R.Circle. The association said that different political parties mar the beauty of the circle by displaying buntings and banners, in violation of the Zoning of Land Use and Regulations 1996 of the Comprehensive Development Plan for Mysore. It has demanded that the area around the K.R.Circle and other important monuments be declared a special control zone. - Special Correspondent

Zoo Club enrolment

MYSORE: The Mysore Zoo will enrol those in the age group of 12 to 18 for the Youth Club of Mysore Zoo and impart knowledge about wildlife conservation. Members will also be exposed to animal keeping and feeding. The Zoo Youth Club members will have access to the library and will also be given training in wildlife photography. Those interested should obtain the applications before May 31 and submit the same along with three stamp-sized photographs and blood group certificate within June 15.

Silver jubilee celebrations

Madikeri: Preparations to celebrate the silver jubilee of the Kodagu District Journalists Association here on April 28 are in full swing, its president, K.K. Shashidhar, said here on Tuesday. Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy has been invited to inaugurate the function. District in-charge Minister Ramachandra Gowda would release a souvenir. The past presidents of the KDJA would be felicitate. Prizes to various winners of competitions, including sports, would be given away. Man arrested

BHADRAVATI: A man has been arrested for allegedly torturing his wife and reportedly marrying another woman. Police said Basavarajappa and Neelamma, both teachers, were married in 1995. They have two daughters.

For some days, Basavarajappa is alleged to have been torturing his wife and reportedly married another woman without the knowledge of his first wife. Unable to bear the harassment, Ms. Neelamma lodged a complaint with the police, who have arrested Basavarajappa. He has been remanded in judicial custody. — Correspondent
