dated April 26, 1956: Sharp rise in temperature

Acute summer conditions with a heat wave pushing up the mercury beyond the 100 degree mark were experienced in Madras on April 25. The maximum temperature recorded at 1 p.m. was 105.7 degrees at Nungambakkam and 106 degrees at Meenambakkam. This represents a rise by 11 degrees over the previous day's temperature at Nungambakkam and by about 5 degrees at Meenambakkam. That a gruelling day was ahead was evident even at 10 a.m. By about 11 a.m. the mercury had touched 100 degrees .
