ADDING COLOUR: Congress MP from Amethi, Rahul Gandhi, campaigns for his mother Sonia Gandhi in Rae Bareli on Tuesday.
NEW DELHI: The announcement by Rahul Gandhi, Amethi MP, that he is willing to take charge of Congress affairs in Uttar Pradesh has spread joy in the party. Welcoming the announcement, general secretary Ashok Gehlot, who is in charge of the party affairs in the State, suggested that the president appoint Mr. Gandhi AICC general secretary. "We should not limit Rahulji to Uttar Pradesh. The need is to appoint him AICC general secretary and make him in charge of all frontal organisations such as the Youth Congress, the National Students Union of India, the Seva Dal and the Mahila Congress." Mr. Gehlot said youth and workers were keen on Mr. Gandhi taking an active role in shaping the party. At the Hyderabad plenary, the party spoke with one voice seeking a greater role for him. "This is the need of the time and the Congress will benefit from it." Another general secretary Digvijay Singh said Mr. Gandhi's announcement would stimulate the organisation.
