Load-shedding to stabilise demand-supply gap

Staff Reporter

Sudden rise in demand leads to fall in frequency

  • Citizens swelter in heat for an hour with power shutdown
  • Overstrained grid gets 10 mega watts relief

ELURU: The Eastern Power Distribution Company Limited (EPDCL) has resorted to `load relief' in all the urban centres of West Godavari, in a bid to strike a balance between the demand-supply position pertaining to power. Power went off for one hour in the noon on Tuesday as a fallout of the load relief, making life miserable for people in all the eight municipal towns, in hot summer. According to official sources, this measure provided the overstrained grid with a 10 megawatts relief. Such measures are likely to continue this whole summer.

An official told The Hindu The Hindu, that urban centres were chosen for load relief following the Government's instructions to save standing crops by ensuring regular power supply to rural areas.

    `Quite comfortable'

The strain on the grid is attributed to a sudden `rise' in demand for power in certain sectors leading to a fall in frequency, forcing Transco to opt for `load relief'.

Meanwhile, Y.P.M.M. Prasad, Superintending Engineer, EPDCL, claimed that the district was quite comfortable in terms of power supply as compared to the previous year. The power consumption in the current season stood at 7.2 MU as against 7.8 during the corresponding period last year, he added.

Mr Prasad informed that the district ranked 6th in the State in getting capacitors installed to agricultural pump sets by the farmers. He said 3,990 capacitors were installed so for as against the total services of 60,700. He was hopeful that all the farmers would go for capacitors by the end of April.
