Uttar Pradesh
Lucknow: Taking a serious note of Urban Development Minister Azam Khan's reported threat to prevent him from entering Rampur, Uttar Pradesh Governor has asked Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav to ``discipline'' him (the Minister). The Governor, who is scheduled to visit Rampur on Wednesday, had a meeting with the Chief Minister here on Monday evening and asked him to ``discipline'' Mr. Khan, informed sources said on Tuesday. He pointed out to Mr. Yadav that Mr. Khan's statements were violative of the Constitution, they said. Mr. Khan reportedly threatened to prevent the Governor from entering Rampur if he was accompanied by Congress leaders during his scheduled visit. He is reported to have told Samajwadi Party workers to wave black flags at the Governor. Mr. Rajeswar would be attending a function at Raza Library of which he is ex-officio Chairman. It is not the first time that the Governor has asked for Mr. Khan to be disciplined. He has written two letters to the Chief Minister asking him to explain the Minister's behaviour after Mr. Khan used improper language against the Governor. Their relations worsened after the Governor's refusal to give his assent to the controversial Maulana Mohammad Ali Jauhar Urdu University at Rampur.
War of words
Meanwhile, the war of words between Mr. Khan and Minister for Haj Haji Yaqoob Qureshi continued with the former shooting off a letter to Mr. Qureshi asking him to return the money donated by the people of Meerut for the proposed Maulana Mohammad Ali Jauhar Urdu University at Rampur as it was not likely to take shape. Mr. Khan, in his letter, sought to know the names of the persons who had donated the money so that the same could be returned to them directly. Virtually ridiculing Mr. Qureshi, Mr. Khan said: ``It was a historic decision and the people would remember his (Qureshi) cooperation'' in its formation. ``At the moment your (Qureshi's) position among the Muslims in the country is that of an international leader.... You are their ideal and could become their messiah,'' Mr. Khan said in his letter released to the press. Mr. Qureshi had, in a letter, to Mr. Khan on Monday asked him to return Rs 10 lakh donated by the people of Meerut for the University. -- PTI
