Kakinada: The district unit of the AP United Medical and Health employees union has demanded that the Government fill vacant posts to ensure better medical care. Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, Duvva Seshu Babji, honorary president of the union said that the district had only 80 PHCs as against 168 required under the norms. There was sever staff shortage too, he added.
Contract staff
Of the total 2500 para medical employees working in the PHCs more than 500 were contract workers, he said, dubbing it a "great injustice". Many of the PHCs were functioning without regular doctors. He claimed that the attempts of the Government to convert the PHCs and hospitals into society hospitals under the pretext of reforms, were foiled by the stiff resistance of unions.
Two-day meet
Babji said that all these issues would come up before the conference of the district union to be held here on May 7 and 8, and a concrete programme of action would be finalised. An organising committee has been constituted with Bhadrachalam MP Midium Baburao as the honorary chairman, local MLA Mutha Gopalakrishna as the chairman, government general hospital superintendent Dr C Hanumantharao, District Medical and Health Officer Dr SSC Chakra Rao as the patrons. Union president Katari Suryanarayana Raju, Palivela Srinivasarao general secretary and Dadala Pushparagam vice president also attended the press conference.
