Cruelty to elephants

Elephants are put through a tough grind during the festival season.

The pachyderms are made to walk on the roads for long distances under the scorching summer sun.

Elephants cannot withstand excessive heat as their sweat glands are present inside their body.

Even though a law was enacted a few years ago that elephants should not be used for any such activities and should not be permitted to walk along the roads during noon time, the law is often observed more in the breach.

The State Government and the civic bodies concerned should take effective action to ensure that the laws are strictly followed and those violating it are punished.

A special force should be constituted to curb such incidents.

Employment for fishermen

Kerala and other coastal States are experiencing a severe summer, mainly owing to deforestation of the coast. After the tsunami attack, the fish catch has become alarmingly low and fishermen face unemployment. Afforestation of the coastal areas by employing idle fishermen would solve the climatic change and create jobs for fishermen.

Tourism development should not deny access to fishermen. More fishing harbours are necessary. A coastal authority should be set up to ensure that the coast is kept an eco-friendly area.
